Adobe Reader “Read out loud” Adobe Reader offers a “read out loud” function which provides text to speech for pdf files Open Adobe reader. Open an adobe (pdf) file. Toggle to the “view” screen and scroll down to “Read Out Loud.” Select “Activate Read Out Loud.” ” Then select how you want the document to be read.
Once you are done, open any PDF file that you want to be read to you. By default, it should open within Adobe Acrobat Reader. If not, right-click and choose the “Open With” option. Once the PDF is open, click on View and select the “ Read Out Loud” option at the bottom of the list. Read Out Loud is a Text-to-Speech (TTS) tool that is built into Adobe Reader. Adobe Acrobat Reader DC has replaced Adobe Reader XI as Adobe’s free PDF reader. Read&Write 11 is compatible with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, but a few steps need to be made in order for Read&Write to work with Reader DC as below.
If Adobe Acrobat Reader DC has been installed after Read&Write, you will need to visit our Essentials site with your serial number and choose the option Read&Write tools. Simply click on Reinstall PDF Aloud to get the latest installer, and install it.
Turn off Protected Mode:
You will need to switch off Enable Protected Mode. You can do this by going to:
Edit > Preferences > Security(Enhanced) and turn off Enabled Protected Mode At Startup.
- In Preferences go to Security(Enhanced)
- Untick Enable Protected Mode At Startup and click OK
Using PDFAloud with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC:
To use PDFAloud with Reader DC first be sure that Read&Write is setup to use PDFaloud with Adobe.
- Click the dropdown arrow at the right end of the Read&Write 11 toolbar and select Use PDFAloud for Adobe. Restart Read&Write
- Click on the PDF Aloud button on the Read&Write 11 toolbar and open a PDF
- When Adobe Acrobat Reader DC opens go to Tools and scroll down to bottom and locate PDF Aloud toolbar then click Open
- The PDF Aloud toolbar will then appear in the Reader document view
Please Note: Reader DC doesn't support plugins with online PDFs so only downloaded PDFs can be read with PDF Aloud.

Use the Accessibility Setup Assistant to set up Reader for either a screen magnifier or a screen reader.
Choose Edit > Accessibility > Setup Assistant, and then select the options you want from each screen of the Setup Assistant.

To activate Read Out Loud:
- On the View menu, choose Read Out Loud > Activate Read Out Loud.
- Again go to View > Read Out Loud and then choose an appropriate option for reading:
- To read the current page, choose Read This Page Only.
- To read the entire document, choose Read To End of Document.
Reflow a PDF to temporarily present it as a single column that is the width of the document pane. This reflow view makes the document easier to read.
To reflow text, choose View > Zoom > Reflow.
In most cases, only readable text appears in the reflow view. Text that does not reflow includes forms, comments, digital signature fields, and page artifacts, such as page numbers, headers, and footers. Pages that contain both readable text and form or digital signature fields do not reflow. Vertical text reflows horizontally.
