No technology is perfect and from time to time, Xbox Live or one of its services such as party chat may fail. In this troubleshooting article, we’ll show you what you can do if you can’t hear your friends after you join a party on your Xbox One.

Causes why you may not hear your friends after joining a party on Xbox One

There are four common reasons why voice chat may not work in a party.

Privacy settings not set properly.

A limited Xbox Live profile may prevent you from joining parties or doing voice chat. This can happen if you set your Xbox Live account privacy to a strict setting.

Xbox

Friends are blocked or muted.

Another possible cause for this problem may come from a setting on your Friend’s list. If the friends you’re trying to talk to are blocked or muted before joining the party, you can’t expect any voice response from them.

Xbox Live services outage.

Sometimes, parties may not work properly in Xbox Live due to server issues. Voice chat may also not work properly if there’s a network problem like weak wifi signal, or if your internet connection speed is slow or intermittent.

NAT issue.

In some cases, NAT-related issue can prevent voice chats from working. This happens if your Network Address Translation or NAT type is not set to Open. Your console’s NAT type depends on your router settings so in order to change it, you’ll need to know how to pull up your router’s user interface and change necessary settings from there.

Solutions for your Xbox One if you can’t hear friends in party

Xbox Live Chat Settings

These are the possible solutions that you can do if you can hear someone in a party:

  1. Make sure that your headset is working.

Before you proceed, you want to make sure that the headset you’re using for voice chat is working normally. To check, try calling another friend outside the party and see if you can hear him or her just fine. If you can’t also hear the other friend, your headset may be defective.

  2. Check for Xbox Live server issues.

If the headset is working normally, your next move is to ensure that you check Xbox Live service status for any on-going issues.

  3. Review your Xbox Profile privacy settings.

If your account’s communication settings are not set properly, it may block voice chats. To check:
-Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    -Select System.
    -Select Settings.
    -Select Account.
    -Select Privacy & online safety.
    -Select Xbox Live privacy.
    -Select View details & customize.
-Go to Communication & multiplayer and do the necessary changes.

  4. Make sure friends are not blocked or not muted.

Check if the person/s you’re trying to communicate in your party were blocked or muted previously. To do that:
-Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    -Select People.
-Select the Gamertag of the player you want to unblock or unmute.
-From the player’s profile, select Report or Block, and then select Unblock or Unmute.

  5. Ensure NAT type is open.

To fix any possible NAT-related problem, you need to check your Xbox’s NAT type first. Here’s how to do that:
-Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    -Select System.
    -Select Settings.
    -Select General.
    -Select Network settings.
-Under Current Network Status, the NAT Type field displays your current NAT type.
If the NAT type does not say Open, which means it may be Moderate or Strict, you’ll have to troubleshoot your router to change some settings. Some of the router troubleshooting steps that you might need includes turning on UPnP, upgrading the firmware, opening network ports (port forwarding), enabling DMZ, or a factory reset. Exact steps on how to do any of these steps depends on your equipment. Make sure to contact your Internet Service Provider if you don’t have any idea how to perform these tasks.
